Southern California Externships (SoCalEx)

In 1993, six Los Angeles area ABA-accredited law schools, including Southwestern, formed a consortium, the Greater Los Angeles Consortium on Externships (GLACE), currently called the Southern California Externship Consortium or SoCalEx. Current member schools include California Western School of Law, Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law, Loyola Law School, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, Southwestern Law School, UCI’s School of Law, UCLA School of Law, and USC Gould School of Law.

The purpose of the consortium is to share externship-related information and to develop joint standards for the field supervision of externs by field supervisors. The SoCalEx field supervision manual (available on the right bar of this page) incorporates those standards and highlights common fieldwork issues that are often of interest to students and supervisors.

SoCalEx also periodically hosts externship supervisor trainings, with some of the trainings co-organized with the Bay Area Consortium of Externships. This page includes recordings and materials from recent training sessions, along with a self-study CLE program co-prepared by Southwestern’s Externship Co-Director, Vice Dean Anahid Gharakhanian.
