Nine Southwestern Students Awarded Scholarships by the Mexican American Bar Foundation

On Saturday June 10th, the Mexican American Bar Foundation awarded scholarships to nine Southwestern students at its 26th Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala.

Of the 25 scholarships awarded, Southwestern students made up the largest contingent of honorees, earning a total of $81,000 in scholarship money. The awarded students included Blanca Martinez, Brenda Navarro, Jennifer Andrade, Nancy Martinez, Rosio Flores, Vianney Moran, Yamili F. Gonzalez, Yeison J. Soto Valdez, and Zurit Zuray Barajas. Recipients were selected based on academic achievement, community service, financial need, leadership and hardships overcome.

“We are delighted to support and celebrate yet another outstanding group of Latino law students as they pursue their dreams and careers in the law. These young scholars represent the future of our profession and community” says Nina Huerta President of the MABF. “Each scholar has a unique personal history and experience; many have overcome significant odds. All reflect the very best of our profession, and despite the rigors of law school, they generously serve and support the community, their families and their fellow law students. “

“In my twenty years of service to MABF, some 150 Southwestern students have won scholarships totaling over $500,000, and two of those students — Southwestern alumni Patricia Higuera ’05 and Rick Rodriguez ’13 — now serve as trustees of the Foundation,” said Professor Christopher David Ruiz Cameron, Gala Director “I was quite proud that once again no local law school won more scholarships this year than Southwestern.”
