Southwestern Law Professor Michael Epstein Featured in NBC Report on Facebook Scams
With Facebook scams on the rise, Southwestern Law School’s Professor Michael Epstein recently shared his legal expertise in an NBC investigative report. The story focuses on Shauna Murphy’s ordeal after scammers took over her Facebook account to solicit money from her friends, leaving her unable to regain control.
Professor Epstein detailed the legal hurdles victims face, highlighting that Facebook's Terms of Service favor the company and restrict lawsuits, making accountability difficult. He stressed the importance of strong account security and advised Murphy to warn her friends and create a new account.
Epstein, who joined Southwestern in 1999, teaches business, entertainment, and media law. He supervises Southwestern's Amicus Project Practicum and helps students with entertainment law externships. His most recent book is "Mass Media Law: A Survey of Content and Culture" (2014).
