Southwestern’s Inaugural Online J.D. Cohort Attracts Over 1,500 Applicants

Los Angeles, CA — Southwestern Law School’s Online J.D. program, the first of its kind to offer both full-time and part-time tracks in a primarily asynchronous online format, drew more than 1,500 applicants in its inaugural year. More than 1,000 applicants selected an online program as their top choice, while another 500 noted it as their second choice. The program enrolled 84 students, reflecting high demand for flexible legal education options.

“We’ve been thrilled by the overwhelming interest in our program,” said Amy McLellan, Associate Dean for Online Education and Associate Professor of Law. “This response highlights the shifting priorities in legal education, where students seek both quality and flexibility without compromising on their professional and personal lives.”

At the heart of Southwestern’s ABA-accredited Online J.D. program is a reimagined approach to legal education. Recognizing the evolving needs of modern students, the faculty envisioned and built the law school of the future. The program features engaging, video-based classes enhanced with images, animations, and quiz questions, providing a more satisfying and effective learning experience. This innovative approach, combined with the Socratic Method in an online environment, ensures every student has an equal opportunity to participate and succeed.

The inaugural class is diverse, with students ranging from seasoned professionals to first-generation college graduates. Many students bring backgrounds in fields such as business, education, medicine, and public service, and several are balancing their studies with full-time careers.

In addition to its innovative academic structure, the program offers access to Southwestern’s extensive externship network and award-winning clinics. Students can gain practical experience in legal settings either locally or in Los Angeles, ensuring they are profession-ready upon graduation.

“Southwestern's Online J.D. program is a carefully designed, forward-looking initiative that meets students where they are,” said Darby Dickerson, President and Dean of Southwestern Law School. “We are proud to offer a program that not only broadens access to legal education but also upholds the high standards of our institution.”
