SCALE Student Spotlight – Meet Maya Dilanian

Maya Dilanian’s summer at the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law was an experience that solidified her passion for family law—and much of her success can be traced back to the preparation she received through the SCALE program. The accelerated, immersive nature of SCALE sharpened her ability to quickly absorb and apply complex legal concepts, which became crucial when she was faced with delicate cases involving custody battles and domestic violence. Beyond technical skills, SCALE instilled in Maya the importance of adaptability, a strong work ethic, and problem-solving—all vital in navigating sensitive legal matters. The hands-on simulations she experienced during the program gave her the confidence to communicate effectively with clients and step into her role under the guidance of her supervising attorney.

One of the most meaningful moments of Maya’s summer came while working on a domestic violence restraining order case. She was tasked with preparing and filing the necessary court documents. When the temporary restraining order was granted, she received an emotional phone call from the client. Hearing the relief and gratitude in the client’s voice deeply moved her. The client expressed how much the outcome meant to her safety and well-being, and it was at that moment Maya realized the true impact of her work. It was an unforgettable experience that reaffirmed Maya’s commitment to family law and her desire to use her skills to make a difference in people’s lives.

Before her summer placement, Maya set a personal goal to build meaningful connections within the family law community. SCALE had taught her the value of mentorship and networking, and those lessons guided her throughout the summer. Whether it was attending events or connecting with family law judges at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, Maya took every opportunity to deepen her understanding of the field and forge relationships that would support her long-term growth. These connections, along with the experiences she gained at the Harriet Buhai Center, have only strengthened her resolve to pursue a career in family law, knowing the positive impact she can have on families in need.
