Gambling law is a relatively unique body of law. Historically, gambling has been both prohibited and criminalized on the one hand and legalized and regulated on the other hand.

Gambling law addresses the legalized and regulated aspect of gambling; the course would only lightly touch on the prohibited and criminalized aspect of gambling.

This course provides an overview of public policy issues involving legalized gambling. The course examines the state and federal role in gambling regulation; the history, nature, and economics of gambling; the regulatory and licensing process relative to involvement in gambling; ethical requirements for the gambling lawyer; accounting and internal controls; gambling contracts; advertising; problem gambling; and practical approaches to legal representation.

The course will also examine several specialized gambling areas, which may vary from semester to semester, including Native American Casinos, internet gambling, sports books and Fantasy League betting, and Lotteries.
