You're Invited (by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) to Press Freedom Week Events

As working journalists, members of the HFPA value press freedom and have been lending its support to organizations on the forefront of protecting journalists’ rights to safely and fully report the news wherever they are covering it.

Southwestern Law School's entire community* is invited to three events highlighting different aspects of freedom of the press during HFPA's first Press Freedom Week (presented in partnership with the Los Angeles Times). We are invited to all events, whether or not sponsored by the HFPA/LA Times.

The three HFPA/LA Times events include:

September 16 at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills: Reception at 6 p.m., Panel and Q&A from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Press Freedom and Elections, exploring the challenges and threats to press freedom and democracy during the election process. Panel discussion moderated by Ramzi Malouki, West Coast News Bureau Chief for Canal Plus (France);

September 18 at the DTLA Central Public Library: Reception at 6 p.m., Panel and Q&A from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Press Freedom and Diversity: Whose Voice Gets Included?, asking the question “Who Makes the News and for Whom? Panel discussion moderated by Lester Holt, NBC Nightly News Anchor; and,

September 19 at UCLA School of Law: Reception at 6 p.m., Panel and Q&A from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Cross-Border Legal Threats to Press Freedom: The Experience of Documentarians, featuring documentary filmmakers and legal experts who explore the ways in which laws are used to punish journalists who publish government secrets. Panel discussion moderated by Dale Cohen, director of the Documentary Legal Clinic at the UCLA School of Law.
