Assistant Director – Graduate Class Advisor, Career Services Office

The Assistant Director – Graduate Class Advisor takes a leadership role in developing and implementing career development programs, performing professional services and assignments in support of the Career Office Program for final year students and members of the most recently graduated class. In addition, the Assistant Director - Graduate Class Advisor works directly with the Associate Dean of Career Services; the Office of Accreditation, Compliance, Institutional Effectiveness; and the Dean’s Office to collect and maintain data on graduate employment outcomes in compliance with state, federal, and professional association regulations. The Assistant Director – Graduate Class Advisor reports directly to the Associate Dean of Career Services. This is an exempt position with a on-campus and remote work modality.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develops, formulates, implements, and evaluates career and job development programs specifically targeting final year students and recent graduates;
  • Conducts workshops, prepares written materials including handouts, digital newsletters, and regular email updates on the job search and the job market; 
  • Counsels students and alumni (particularly final year students and recent graduates) on career planning and job search strategies, as well as overall professional development;
  • Advises the Associate Dean on collaboration amongst the office’s counselors to provide outreach and counseling to each 3L graduating without employment;
  • Collaborates with other departments, including Student Services, the Registrar, Academic Success and Bar Preparation Office, and the Office of Accreditation, Compliance, Institutional Effectiveness to track and support grads; 
  • Tracks and enters employment status of recent graduates and collaborates closely with the Associate Dean of Career Services on data reporting;
  • Prepares comprehensive reports for internal and external constituents and the ABA;
  • Reaches out to final year students in the market for post-graduate work to learn of career goals and to assist to develop leads into the communities in which they seek to work;
  • Instructs and assists students in the preparation of effective job application materials; 
  • Coaches recent graduates and final year students on personal advocacy techniques both for cultivating relationships in networking and interviewing for open positions;
  • Establishes and maintains contact with legal and other appropriate employers to enhance employment opportunities; and
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned. As required, represents the CSO at national, regional and local meetings of appropriate professional organizations and associations, and periodically interfaces with law career counselors at other law schools.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • At least five years of legal practice, preferably with supervisory responsibilities;  
  • JD Degree required and a minimum of two years of full-time experience involving all facets of group and individual career counseling in a law school or legal environment or an equivalent combination of training and experience resulting in the possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

  • General knowledge about and strong interest to continue learning about the legal employment market and the legal community, including post-graduate career opportunities within the local, national, and global legal community;
  • Strong interest in counseling and guiding law students with respect to their professional development;
  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate data with attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, and knowledge of legal resume and cover letter format;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, active listening, and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Highest ethical and professional standards and proven ability to exercise exemplary judgment when dealing with sensitive information and difficult situations;
  • Strong technology abilities, with a high degree of comfort, using Microsoft Office and Excel; and,
  • Enthusiasm for working with law students, lawyers, and the legal community.

Salary: $70,000 - $73,000/yr.
