Deputy Title IX Coordinator and Civil Rights Investigator

The Deputy Title IX Coordinator and Civil Rights Investigator (“Deputy”) will complete the day-to-day responsibilities of a Deputy Title IX Coordinator. The Deputy role involves implementing Southwestern’s Sexual Misconduct Policy, including conducting investigations and providing support following reports of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and other alleged Policy violations. In addition, the Deputy will be assigned investigations and reviews of civil rights discrimination, harassment, and retaliation complaints. Civil rights issues may include, but are not limited to, allegations of discrimination and harassment based on race, national origin, disability, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and other protected categories covered by federal and state laws. The Deputy will also be responsible for conducting proactive Title IX and Title VI workshops and training.

This is a full-time exempt position with an expected start date of September 2024. This hybrid position includes on-campus and remote work with at least two days per week hybrid during the academic year and three days per week hybrid during summer.

Primary Job Responsibilities

The Deputy will work closely with multiple law school offices and departments, including General Counsel’s Office, Administrative Services/HR, Student Services, DEI Initiatives, and Campus Safety & Security. The Deputy will be expected to act as a neutral party in conducting prompt and thorough investigations of alleged incidents and will provide a detailed, unbiased report regarding the findings of the investigation and an analysis that tracks the applicable policies and legal standards. Among other things, the Deputy’s responsibilities will include:

  • Promptly responding to reports of sexual misconduct involving students, faculty, and staff, including sharing resources, providing information on supportive measures and formal complaint options, and offering to meet with those impacted;
  • Maintaining timely communication with key stakeholders;
  • Working with campus partners to make appropriate referrals for support and implementing appropriate supportive measures;
  • Developing an investigative plan for each complaint;
  • Interviewing the complainant, respondent, and potential witnesses;
  • Gathering relevant documentation;
  • Drafting and issuing reports;
  • Implementing and keeping apprised of new developments and best practices in Title IX and Civil Rights investigation procedures
  • Conducting investigations into allegations of discrimination, harassment, and hostile environment based on protected categories, including age, race, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and national origin; and
  • Conducting Title IX and Title VI trainings and maintaining statistics.
  • Drafting and revising policies and internal operating procedures.
  • Staying updated on Title IX, Title VI, and related state and federal laws.
  • Completing other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • J.D. required. We will consider non-J.D. candidates who have at least five years of experience as a Title IX or Civil Rights investigator at another institution of higher education.
  • Substantial experience working with diverse populations, including populations of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, and persons with disabilities.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.

Beneficial experience includes:

  • At least 2-4 years of experience conducting investigations, preferably in the education and/or civil rights arena;
  • Training regarding Title IX or Title VI.
  • Familiarity with higher education and student conduct practices;
  • Experience in, and awareness of, the sensitivity required when interacting with a diverse community on trauma-related topics;
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for individual needs;
  • Expertise in conducting sensitive and confidential investigations;
  • Demonstrated skill in party and witness interview and investigation techniques;
  • Ability to manage multiple shifting priorities under time constraints;
  • Strong ability to multitask, including managing multiple investigations or reviews concurrently;
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and establish credibility with a broad range of constituents, including faculty, staff, and students;
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Salary: $75,000 to $95,000, depending on credentials and experience
